Welcome to hem

HEM is a youth-facing, student run magazine focusing on short fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction and opinion pieces. The aim of HEM is to provide a platform to the world’s young Indian diaspora populace. We provide a space for talented young writers, journalists, poets and storytellers, where they can safely express themselves and enhance the reach of their ideas. HEM intends to discover the untapped talent in the student diaspora population, and to raise each writer’s work to a higher standard.

WHY HEM?

A ‘Hem’ is the edge of a piece of cloth that has been turned down and sewn under. For tailors, hemming clothing is the final touch- the finishing action that completes the carefully crafted garment that they adjust. At HEM, we each try to embody our inner tailor when we look at submissions for the magazine. We appreciate the dexterity with which our writers masterfully weave their tales- our role is simply to tie up any loose ends. It is not our position to change the integrity of the fabric we receive, merely to refine its quality. To that end, our editors provide feedback on each piece we receive, whether or not we can publish the piece in the latest edition of HEM
